Narrative:
For this assignment, I explored how changing focus within a constant frame can create a visual narrative. I photographed a girl painting in three consecutive frames:
-
Frame 1: The girl’s face was in focus, highlighting her expression and presence as the central character.
-
Frame 2: The focus shifted to the artwork she was currently working on, with the brush in her hand, emphasizing her action and the process of creation.
-
Frame 3: The focus moved to the wall in front of her, showcasing her past artworks, giving context to her journey and accomplishments.
Observation -
By manipulating aperture and selectively focusing different elements within the same frame, I was able to guide the viewer’s attention sequentially and tell a story without changing the composition. The shallow depth of field created by a wider aperture allowed the foreground or background to blur, emphasizing the subject in focus. This exercise demonstrated that narrative in photography is not only about changing scenes but can also be achieved by controlling focus and depth of field, making each element in the frame meaningful and part of the storytelling.
